Reservation is a system which is followed in India to provide opportunities for the people, who belong to deprived classes. The main motive of the reservation system is to represent people from disadvantage groups, who are not given sufficient opportunities and often neglected by the society. India is a secular country in which citizens must be treated equally irrespective of their religion, caste, race and sex. According to Article 14 of the Indian Constitution everyone are equal before law and everyone deserve equal protection under the law within the territory of India. There are two sides of people who vouch for and against with regard to reservation. One side states that when it comes to equality India still has a long way to go, because in this country the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, equality laws are still in names and due to hierarchy of caste system lower caste people are highly affected, therefore there is a necessity for reservation to elevate the depressed classes. On the other side people claim that there is no need for reservation as it obstructs talented individuals from reaching their desirable goals, for example A and B secured same marks in NEET both are contesting for a single seat as B is from depressed class B got the seat, from this we can know that even though A and B has same qualification B got the upper hand which is injustice in terms of A’s perspective, that why this side claims that reservation crushes talented individuals which will be a great disadvantage towards our country’s development. The purpose of this article is to discuss the issues arising with regard to reservation such as what is reservation? Significance of reservation how does the reservation system impact society? Pros and cons of reservation, whether reservation favors certain class, do Indians need reservation and whether reservation is the only way to elevate depressed classes.
